Shipwork
Come join! Get out on the water and join a cheerful horde doing boat work!

We can also use self-directed individuals who wish to work on program development. Professionals with experience in historical research, grant-writing, fundraising, event planning, PR and graphic design, and youth programs are particularly desirable, but we can certainly use gal/guy Friday type help!

Folks of all ages and skill and fitness levels can help. We have something for everyone.

Preservation scanning project needs help:
When we got the Whalen, we thought she was coming with no history; but we found some logbooks hidden under the drawers under the captain's bunk.  However, leaks from the wheelhouse above had piddled into the captain's cabin below, damaging these books.  We'd like to scan all the pages to preserve the information.  We seek a volunteer to scan all the pages

Other positions available:

  • Volunteer coordinator to organize volunteers doing shipwork (see column at right).  Involves outreach to volunteers, scheduling and supervision of shipwork.  Knowledge of maintening a steel workboat is ideal; at a minimum a solid knowledge of general paint and paint prep skills and tools is required.
  • Grantwriter
  • p/t bookkeeper
  • general office and admin assistance

Send email of introduction to research(dot)portsidenewyork(at)gmail(dot)com

When n Where:
While in Atlantic Basin, enter pedestrian gate for the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal at the corner of Pioneer and Conover Streets.

Here, we are do not have the Homeland Security regulations constricting us that we had in the containerport, so volunteers can come do shipwork whenever is convenient for them.

While on Pier 11, Atlantic Basin, until 8/24, restoration work can happen happen anytime volunteers are available.

We request that shipwork volunteers chip in at least four hours during a volunteer day. It takes so long to set you up and the put away and/or clean all your equipment, than shorter times are not productive.
